Each time a significant awards ceremony draws close, you'll find a demand for the addition additional classifications to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and delight the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. The same goes for tabletop games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize because like all blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal is the most urgent above others. This is the request: There should be a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and typically generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an essential concession for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.
Present Award Structure
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, making space possible for numerous titles.
Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Think about these this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home at major award shows, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely that year
- A different innovative game was excluded in 2019
- Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
- Limited numbers of puzzle games managed to sneak into niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as the most-played games in the world continuing this trend for over a decade.
The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. You could fill five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude so many good games out.
And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Comparable to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
