Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.
The one-time leader was sentenced of plotting a military coup in the ninth month and given more than over two decades in jail, but he remained under confinement pending appeals.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after recent developments came to light.
This encompassed trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a possible escape.
Judicial Records Show Flight Fears
In a paperwork permitting the detention, the judge said information from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his escape.
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his child.
His son, Flávio, who holds office as a legislator, called for a assembly of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on the weekend.
The senator wrote on social media on the previous day: Will you battle for your homeland, or see it all from your mobile device there on your sofa? I call on you to fight with us."
He said the gathering would be so followers could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our nation."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the judge's determination was the possibility of Bolsonaro's "relocation to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of arranging to request asylum through a consular facility", a announcement said.
The judicial paperwork highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, Brasilia, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.
Worldwide Consequences
His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow populist conservative American leader President Trump, causing him to impose a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.
Bolsonaro is being detained in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will undergo a detention review on the following day.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.
They also requested that he be authorized to leave his home for healthcare, saying he demanded ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other health problems.
Context of Sentencing
The former president was convicted of orchestrating a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the presidential race to his left-wing rival, President Lula.
High Court judges said that he knew of a plot which encompassed plans to murder Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing the former president's case.
The conspiracy was prevented because it failed to get the support of the military leaders. His successor was sworn in without issue on 1 January 2023.
But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, numerous his followers stormed and vandalised government buildings in the federal district, the capital city.
The law enforcement intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.
The justices found that the protesters had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, restore order and reinstate his authority.
At the moment, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also banned from running for public office until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the completion of his term.
The one-time head of state called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
